It’s hard to give critical feedback. Simon was one of the few who could give you this feedback and you would be thankful. It came across as genuine and caring rather than harsh or mean. A memory of mine is when I bought a double CD of Shine 7 in the mid 90's. (For the young’uns out there, this was a silvery plastic platter with audio files on it that you could play in a CD player or the computer – they would scratch easy & melt if you left them in the car on a hot day!). Anyway, as I was saying, I bought this CD and was quite proud of the indie band scene that this CD now permitted me to enter. One day, Simon found the CD and informed me that most of the stuff on it was terrible and my music taste was questionable. After some disagreement on this, I did come to the conclusion that Simon was right. My music taste is still “questionable” as my children tell me and I smile and tell them... I know – a friend told me that a long time ago.
